6 months into building a scheduling tool for dog groomers: what worked and what didn't

Calling groomers beat every email campaign I ran, by a lot.

Quick context: it's a booking page plus SMS reminders for one-person grooming businesses.

  • Phone calls, because most groomers check email once a week
  • Charging from day one filtered out people who wanted a free calendar

What didn't work: building a client app first. Nobody asked for it.

Rules Hub reads the intent of a rule, not just keywords

Reddit's LLM-based moderation tool, open to newly created communities, with wider availability planned for later in 2026. Swapping "my app" for "a tool I use" no longer slips a pitch past a no-promotion rule.

AutoMod acts after you submit and usually stays silent. Mods set thresholds and whether you must pass all or one (docs), so one draft can survive on one account and vanish on another.

What to do when your Reddit post gets removed: 5 steps and a modmail to copy

A removal is information, not a verdict. Five steps, plus a modmail you can copy.

  1. 1. Confirm it is really removedOpen it logged out. Your own view can look normal.
  2. 2. Look for the reasonStickied comment, private message or modmail.
  3. 3. Match the removal to a layerInstant means filters or AutoMod. Hours later means a mod or reports.
  4. 4. Send one short modmailAsk if it was automated. Under 5 sentences, no arguing.
  5. 5. Fix, then wait for an answerNever delete and repost identical text.

The 12-Point Check Before You Hit Post

Run it after the draft, before you submit. Each line maps to a removal layer above.

Account

3 checks
  • Meets the sub's karma and account-age thresholds
  • A few real comments in that community in the last week or two
  • Recent history is not mostly links to your own product

Rules

4 checks
  • Full rules read, including the wiki
  • Right flair and post type (text, link, image)
  • Self-promo allowed here, or you use the weekly promo thread
  • No rule against AI-assisted posts, or the draft is fully yours

Draft

3 checks
  • First sentence is a lesson, number or question, not your product
  • Title states a specific outcome or asks a real question
  • Hype words (best, game-changer, must-have) are gone

After posting

2 checks
  • Checked the post in a logged-out window
  • Blocked the next hour to reply to every comment
The 10% guideline: 1 promo for every 9 that are not

Reddit's spam policy asks you to think about how often you link a business you run. Many communities still use this ratio.

What makes a Reddit post get upvoted: 8 moves in 3 phases

Reddit rewards a real result or a hard-won lesson over a launch announcement. Eight moves, in three phases.

Before you post1 week out
  1. 1. Lurk first. Read last month's top posts, and what got removed.
  2. 2. Comment in the subreddit for at least a week before you post. So your account is not brand new when someone checks.
While you writeThe draft
  1. 3. Lead with value. A number, lesson or process before any product.
  2. 4. Match the format the subreddit already rewards. Story subs want narrative, technical subs want data.
  3. 5. Write a title that states a specific outcome or asks a real question. Vague teases get scrolled past.
  4. 6. Keep paragraphs short. 2 to 3 sentences, readers scan.
  5. 7. Make any link optional. Last line or first comment, never the title.
After you postFirst 60 minutes
  1. 8. Reply to every comment in the first hour. Early engagement is one of the strongest signals for a subreddit's hot ranking.
7 common Reddit post mistakes and the fix

Most posts fail on one of these seven, not on the idea.

MistakeFix
01. Posting to a subreddit you haven't readSkim the rules and top 10 posts of the month first
02. Leading with the pitchProduct in the first sentence gets removed before line two
03. Writing a title in ALL CAPS or with excessive punctuationReads as an ad, several subs auto-filter it
04. Cross-posting identical text to five subreddits at onceFilters and mods catch it, and it can flag your account
05. Ignoring subreddit-specific formatting rulesFlair, no-link rules and weekly promo threads matter
06. Disappearing after you postFirst-hour replies push a post into hot, not upvotes alone
07. Posting before you've ever commented in that communityZero history plus a pitch is the fastest spam flag

The tool writes text only. It does not export images or fake vote counts.

Do
Label it as a mockup or example
Use made-up usernames like u/example_user
Test how a post idea reads before posting it
Keep vote counts plausible, or leave them out
Don't
Show a real person or brand as the author
Post a made-up story to a subreddit as real
Fake a screenshot of a real thread as proof
Pass a mockup off as social proof in an ad
How to make a mockup here, in 4 steps
  1. Step 1Describe the moment and the outcome
  2. Step 2Generate, then edit until it sounds human
  3. Step 3Pick a title from the six formulas
  4. Step 4Screenshot the preview frame

Reddit's site-wide rules ban impersonating people or organizations in a misleading way. A labeled mockup is fine, a fake post passed off as real is not.

After the draft

A Good Draft Is Only Step One

The right subreddit, its rules and a follow-up plan decide whether a post lands. These pages cover the rest.

Reddit Post Templates and Generator FAQ

Templates, removals, AI drafts, mockups and limits, answered.

A good Reddit post template has five parts: a specific title (a real result or a real question), a first line that gives the lesson or the number, one or two sentences of context, the value itself in short paragraphs or a list, and a closing question that invites people to share their own experience. The 12 templates on this page all follow that order. Pick the one that matches your goal, for example Ask for Advice when you need help or Lessons Learned when you want to share what worked.

Every template on this page has a Blank version with bracketed placeholders and a Filled example that shows the same structure with realistic details. Switch the toggle on any card and hit Copy template. The blank versions are free, need no login, and work for any niche: SaaS, ecommerce, freelancing, hobbies, finance or personal stories.

Check four things before you submit. First, the subreddit's rules and required flair, since many communities auto-remove posts with no flair. Second, your account against the subreddit's karma and account-age thresholds, which AutoModerator enforces silently. Third, the post format (text only, no links in the body, weekly self-promo thread, and so on). Fourth, the draft itself: lead with a real lesson or question, keep any product mention to the last line, and cut hype words. The 12-point checklist on this page covers each one in order.

An instant removal almost always comes from an automated layer, not a human. Reddit's site-wide spam filter catches repeated links and bot-like patterns, and AutoModerator catches accounts under the subreddit's karma or age threshold, missing flair, and banned domains or keywords. Open the post in a logged-out window to confirm it is gone, look for a removal comment or modmail, then send the mods a short, polite modmail asking whether it was automated and what to change. Do not delete and repost the same text.

Some communities do. On August 5, 2026 Reddit expanded Rules Hub, a moderation tool built on large language models that checks posts against the intent of a subreddit's written rules instead of a keyword list. Reddit says it was tested in more than 700 communities, it is open to newly created communities, and wider availability is planned for later in 2026. Moderators choose which rules to automate and whether a match goes to the mod queue, gets filtered or gets removed. Rewording a promotional post to dodge keywords works less and less, so write a post that fits the rule, not one that slips past it.

Reddit's own spam policy targets repeated or unsolicited actions, like posting the same link across many communities or programming bots to promote a product. Keep promotion rare, give real value first, take part in the community before posting any links, and read each subreddit's rules. Many communities still follow the old 10% guideline: no more than roughly one in ten of your contributions should be about your own thing.

Yes, by putting the subreddit and the angle into the topic box. The generator writes from your topic description, so a topic like "a lessons-learned post for r/freelance about raising my rates after 2 years" gives a much closer draft than "raising rates". Then check that subreddit's rules, since two communities on the same topic can have opposite rules about links and self-promotion, and use the template fit table on this page to match the format.

Yes. The Reddit Post Generator and all 12 templates are free to use with no login. The generator is rate-limited to 5 drafts per minute per visitor to prevent abuse. The paid MediaFast plan adds subreddit discovery, rule checks, scheduling and ban-prevention guidance.

The generator writes the post body: a hook line, short context, the value and a closing question. Pick the title yourself with one of the six title formulas on this page, since the title decides whether anyone opens the post and works best when it states your real result. Paste it into the free Reddit Title Analyzer for a quick score before you submit.

Some will. Reddit's site-wide rules do not ban AI-assisted writing, but individual subreddits can and do set their own AI rules, and moderators interviewed in a 2025 Cornell study described AI content as a threat to quality and to real person-to-person discussion. Treat the generator's output as a first draft: replace any example numbers with your real ones, add your own experience, cut generic phrasing, and read the subreddit's rules for an AI clause before posting.

Reddit allows titles up to 300 characters and text post bodies up to 40,000 characters, but most well-received posts are far shorter. A title that reads well in a feed, and a body of a few short paragraphs with one clear point, usually beats a wall of text. Some subreddits set their own minimum or maximum lengths, so check the rules.

For mockups, yes, as long as nobody is misled. The generator writes the text and the preview frame shows it in a Reddit-style card you can screenshot for a slide, a storytime video script or an ad concept. Label it as a mockup, use made-up usernames, and never present it as a real post by a real person. Reddit's rules ban impersonating people or organizations in a misleading way, and posting a fabricated story as true can get it removed.

Use the Personal Story template. It follows the arc story-driven subreddits reward: the setup and what was at stake, the turning point told in order, the lesson, and a question that opens the thread. It doubles as a Reddit stories template for video creators. To generate one, describe the story in the topic box with the key moment and the outcome, then edit the draft in your own voice.

The templates are built for posts, but the same rules carry over to comments: answer the question that was asked, add one detail from your own experience, and leave links out unless someone asks. Rewrite any comment fully in your own words, since comments are where Reddit users are quickest to spot anything canned or promotional.

For a launch, use Launch or Show and Tell in a subreddit built for showing projects, or Soft Promotion, Value First where the rules allow self-promotion. Lead with the problem or the process, mention the product once, and put the link in a comment if the subreddit restricts links in text posts. For a discussion, use Ask for Advice or Comparison: describe your situation, say what you already tried, and end with a real question instead of a call to action.
